As someone once told me, if you’re looking to start a litigation against a popular technology – stand in line.

Larry, you’ve been hinting about patents and litigation since the early days of my blog. It gets old at some point, although I am sure that’s a climatic point coming to us all. While on topic:

* Nokia went after HTC about VP8, but everyone’s still using it rather openly.

* Digium stood for years adamant behind a decision NOT to use Opus in Asterisk. And finally adopted it in 2016.

The whole premise of “we’re selling, but we want to sell it to the good guys” seems rather ridiculous to me. This is a business after all. The board wants to maximize its price, so will go for the highest bidder.

Oh – and Kin Lane said it best last week: https://apievangelist.com/2017/01/19/oracle-acquiring-apiary/

Tashi,
True we have been in the sidelines for a few years, but now that the board of ConnectionOpen has decided to sell the company and the fact that we have several bidders making proposals makes this a current issue. I am trying to get the patents into the right hands, ignoring ConnectionOpen would be a mistake. A few of the bidders do have the financial backing to enforce licensing and if needed take companies to court. ConnectionOpen did not have that backing. That is one of the reasons ConnectionOpen’s board has decided to sell.

Gaurav,

Thanks. While I could have, this is still in the domain of FUD and have been in the sidelines of the WebRTC discussions for the past 4 years at least.

No one cares about it for now, and I guess that won’t change untill someone large enough is get hit by a patent infringement lawsuit due to it.

Until then, I’ll to what really matters for enterpreneurs – and that’s how to get their idea to market.

Thanks Tsahi, but as per the title I was expecting more about licensing/patents related to webRTC. Please refer to following discussion:

I am sure you would be interested to invest time about this discussion and surely will come out with more detailed yet accurate analysis.

Thanks,
Gaurav
