It is the difference between setting up your own server to communicate with the CPaaS vendor and run all comms logic on your service versus having it reside and oeprate on the CPaaS’ vendor’s machines.

The same reasons for picking AWS Lambda versus putting a Node server on an AWS EC2 machine will apply here with the nuances of this being a communication scenario.

I just wanted to understand in what context you were using serverless in your article.
Maybe I really missed your point but, if you are a CPaaS provider and I am your customer, I will just point my call towards your platform and that’s it. I have built the flow using your drag-and-drop tools and the call flow just follows the script. How the serverless concept affects me here? Appreciate if you can clarify.
Thanks,

P.S. I tried to reply in thread but was labelled as spam.

Aivis,

I think you are missing a lot of the point here. One of the ways to invoke these serverless functions or drag and drop interactions isn’t by way of an API call – they can also take place through an event on your “numbers” – an incoming call or a message for example. As such, they make an awful lot of sense to use that way, especially for the smaller types of interactions or for those that require quite a lot of scaling to implement properly.

At testRTC we are using a flow tool for some of our customers who need to manage incoming calls in their tests and monitoring scripts. I’ve also seen these tools used by other vendors in production for daily operations. In some cases, they happen with no API interaction. In others, they do occur alongside API calls where their purpose is to reduce the development effort and ease maintenance.

That is true, serverless is big trend right now. But what is serverless itself? If you take AWS Lambda as an example, then those are bunch of functions which you host directly on AWS without underlying whatever (OS/VPS/etc). But to trigger these functions in action, you still need to have an external access layer, and that is what is exposed to the user. So the CPaaS may or may not have serverless behind scenes, but what we as users/developers see is just an API.
Those visual drag & drop tools are mostly helpers which allow users/developers to set up these APIs in a way they need them. They are not to be used in daily operations, those are “configuration” tools if you with. The real work happens in APIs anyway.
So maybe there is no just need for anything else at the moment.

Jaro, for the time being, AI/ML is slow moving in CPaaS. Many talk about it but do rather little, or less then you’d think they would with the data they are sitting on.

The only thing I believe will grow more quickly as predicted in your article is AI/ML segment – because you have a lot of data as XXaaS provider. And where is a lot of data, there is a good chance for AI. Especially in call-centers …
